SOCRATES
Socrates (469 BC – 399 BC) was a classical Greek Athenian philosopher.
He is richest who is content with the least, for content is the wealth of nature.
Credited as one of the founders of Western philosophy, he is an enigmatic figure known chiefly through the accounts of later classical writers, especially the writings of his students Plato and Xenophon, and the plays of his contemporary Aristophanes. Many would claim that Plato's dialogues are the most comprehensive accounts of Socrates to survive from antiquity.
Which is better? Only God knows.
Through his portrayal in Plato's dialogues, Socrates has become renowned for his contribution
to the field of ethics, and it is this Platonic Socrates who also lends his name to the concepts
of Socratic irony and the Socratic method, or elenchus. The latter remains a commonly used
tool in a wide range of discussions, and is a type of pedagogy in which a series of questions are
asked not only to draw individual answers, but also to encourage fundamental insight into
the issue at hand. It is Plato's Socrates that also made important and lasting contributions
strong in providing a foundation for much western philosophy that followed.
The unexamined life is not worth living.
Wonder is the beginning of wisdom.
Strong minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, weak minds
discuss people.
By all means marry; if you get a good wife, you’ll become happy; if you get a bad one, you’ll
become a philosopher.
The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance.
Death may be the greatest of all human blessings.
I am not an Athenian nor a Greek, but a citizen of the world.
Then you will not be overjoyed ingood fortune nor too scornful in misfortune.
Sometimes you put walls up not to keep people out, but to see who cares enough to
break them down.
The secret of happiness, you see, is not found in seeking more, but in developing the
capacity to enjoy less.
When the debate is lost, slander becomes the tool of the loser.
Employ your time in improving yourself by other men's writings so that you shall
come easily by what others have labored hard for.
The greatest way to live with honor in this world is to be what we pretend to be.
Remember, no human condition is ever permanent.
To move the world we must move ourselves.
Life contains but two tragedies. One is not to get your heart’s desire; the other is to
get it.
Abhi SharmaAll men's souls are immortal, but the souls of the righteous are immortal and divine.
Be as you wish to seem.
False words are not only evil in themselves, but they infect the soul with evil.
The hour of departure has arrived and we go our ways; I to die, and you to live.
False words are not only evil in themselves, but they infect the soul with evil.
